The AVID College Readiness System is currently implemented in every BSD secondary school (middle, option and high schools). AVID is a schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor, a targeted approach supporting students who identify as first generation, underrepresented on college campuses, qualify as low income or have special circumstances and ongoing professional learning for educators.

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, established in 1980, is implemented in approximately 6,400 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Canada and Australia. 

AVID's College Readiness System:

  • Trains educators to make learning more effective by providing engaging, rigorous, and collaborative classrooms
  • Engages all faculty and staff to drive student success
  • Develops resilient, lifelong learners through academic and social support
  • Increases rigor and raises student achievement
  • Creates a college-going culture schoolwide

AVID College Readiness System has two components:

  1. AVID elective class = rigorous, college preparation class for academically in the middle, first generation college students who are academically in the middle, first generation college students who are traditionally underrepresented in colleges/universities
  2. AVID schoolwide, reaching all students through enhanced systems, leadership, instruction, and culture

Today in Beaverton:

  • 56% of secondary teachers trained in AVID strategies
  • 1,969 secondary students enrolled in AVID elective in grades 6-12

What is AVID?

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a schoolwide approach to curriculum and rigor that works to improve the instruction, systems, leadership, culture on campus to prepare all students for college and career readiness. Each secondary campus in Beaverton has an AVID Site Team and an AVID Coordinator that work to implement and refine practices that support all students across the campus. AVID is also a targeted approach to closing access and opportunity gaps through the AVID Elective class which is an academic acceleration approach in which students are supported to take the most rigorous coursework on their campus and in the future. The AVID Elective class is during the school day and students apply, are interviewed and then placed in the elective class. Become an AVID Volunteer 

AVID volunteers (A.K.A. Tutors) are making a difference in student achievement in our middle and high schools during the school day. 

AVID Volunteer Tutors are needed in all Beaverton middle and high schools for a minimum of one hour a week during the school day. Tutors facilitate a student led tutorial group of seven or fewer AVID scholars under the direct support of the AVID elective teacher. Volunteers can tutor at the school of their choice based on their availability and the school Tutorial schedule (Monday-Friday anytime between 7:30am-3:40pm). Volunteer today!

position description:

AVID volunteers facilitate small tutorial groups in the AVID elective classes that use questioning and collaborative learning techniques to develop answers to their questions on their own. We call them 'Tutors' because of the relational trust established while guiding students to achieve their full potential. You're a coach, and need not be a subject matter expert. Successful tutors assist the teacher and organize groups, take notes, support students to ask questions of each other, and attend regularly throughout the year.

  • Student success: leading students to find their potential leads to success for both of you!
  • Act as a model of personal excellence and high expectation for the purpose of setting an example for AVID students to follow.
  • Communicate frequently with the AVID Coordinator/Teacher providing information regarding progress, or areas of concern.
  • Commit to the same day/time each week; your choice. You will develop a relationship with your group of students who will depend on you to be there to support them.

  • Flexible: Choose your hours and location based on your own personal scheduling needs and work as little as one hour a week: 18 different schools, 7:30 a.m. - 3:50 p.m.
  • Rewarding: You are changing the lives of students, instilling confidence, and contributing to a college-going culture. You will witness triumph, and pride at the students' aha! moments. 
  • Resume Builder: You can gain leadership experience, collaboration skills facilitating group discussions, and developing respect and accountability with students.
  • No Experience Necessary:  No content knowledge or special skills required. Your job is to motivate students. 
  • Training Provided: Six hour of training is provided prior to beginning the position. Ongoing support is offered throughout the school year.

If you are interested in the AVID Elective class for your child please start by contacting your AVID Site Coordinator at your student’s school:

AVID is an elective class which prepares students for success in four-year colleges and universities. It is an academic elective class during the school day (takes the place of a choice elective course) and focuses on accelerating Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading Skills (WICOR). AVID scholars also focus on strategies for success, colleges and careers, and team building to prepare them for the most rigorous courses on their campus and college and career success.  

To be considered for AVID you should: have average test scores, 2.0-3.5 GPA or average of summary judgments on your standards-based report card and exhibit college potential with support. Other selection criteria used: first in your family to attend college, historically underserved in four-year universities, low-income, or special circumstances.

Student responsibilities:

  1. Maintain enrollment in rigorous academic classes, which lead to 4-year college eligibility.
  2. Maintain satisfactory attendance and behavior in all classes.
  3. Maintain an AVID binder with assignment calendars and daily Cornell Notes from all classes.
  4. Complete all homework and dedicate at least 1-2 hours to studying and homework each night.

Student commitment:

If selected for AVID, students understand that they must commit to remaining enrolled in the AVID elective for at least one year, and that they will be allowed to remain in the elective only if they meet the student responsibilities outlined above. They also understand that studies show that they will be most likely to demonstrate academic improvement if they remain in the elective at least three years and most likely to meet my goal of college enrollment if they remain in the AVID elective class through their senior year of high school.

Parent commitment:

Parents and guardians agree to support their student in his or her path to college and to be an advocate for his or her success. Parents agree to attend at least one information meeting about AVID and ensure that their child is studying at least 1-2 hours after school and keeping an organized planner and binder.
